Over the past few days, I have been studying the book of James. Alongside Revelations, this is one of my favorite books. I will break down each chapter in the way God wants me to. Enjoy.
I have always appreciated Paul because he followed the will of God no matter what. We all struggle with that but Paul still made it. In the first chapter of James, the first few verses speak on Faith and endurance
As believers we really dislike being tested. Lets be honest, we want things the easy way and want God to give us what we want like He’s some kind of genie. Its ok, I am guilty.
Verses 1-3 states;
Dear brothers and sisters,* when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing
I thought to myself, how in the world could I be joyful that my life is in shambles? That makes no sense. But then the next verse explains why. God doesn’t test us hence verse 13. But he does allow things to happen just to see how we will react (Read book of Job).
How can a generous God allow this to happen? We need to have faith. God asks us to have the faith of a mustard seed. Do you know how small a mustard seed IS?
( That is a mustard seed, just in case you were wondering)
There are countless examples of what faith can do when we set our minds to it and TRUST GOD. God is never-changing and He is perfect in all His ways (verse 17).
You know the experiences that you’ve been through. You know how real God is. So why make excuses for your lack of faith?
The second part of this chapter speaks on Listening and Doing the will of God.
I know for a fact that I have gotten angry about the result of a prayer of mine. It was not in God’s will but I wanted what I prayed for. God wasn’t saying no, He was saying “not yet” or “I have something better for you”. God calls us to do His will and when we realize how difficult it is, we choose to not listen or obey Him. Then get upset at the fact that we’re in a terrible place in our lives.
Verses 20-22 states,
Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
The Bible is so easy to follow. The equation is simple, we listen to Gods word + obey His commands = blessings and reaching our destiny.
This is just the beginning of the many jewels the book of James has to offer. Chapter 2 is up next.
